I love Anime because it's more realistic than cartoon, the Anime characters also the only one that can charm me or makes me fall in love to them because of their cuteness, adorableness, beautifulness and many other reason.

A lot of anime are not realistic while a lot of cartoons are not either. Many anime have atleast some plot, while so few cartoons do.

:poll: I vote for anime

This question is too vague. There are many cartoons I'd rather watch than anime, but there are a lot of bad cartoons out there as well. Personally, I like what many people refer to as American Anime, ie cartoons that are more realistic and have better plot overall, but without the anime style of art. Cartoons like Justice League come to mind when I refer to American Anime.

Anime has in depth storys and thus are good for people with big brains.
Cartoons are short/stupid/funny and lack story therefore are good for people with little minds.

Hence I prefur Anime

I prefer the Cartoon mostly beacuse it is fantasy. It has no pretentions of being something that it is not. Anime tries so hard to mimick reality that it goes to far for me. Cartoons are just fun and entertaining. But in all fairness, no anime has ever really sucked me in.

While the generalization stands, it isn't always so. By your definition, I'd say FLCL is a cartoon and Justice League is anime. But if I said that, I'd have a lot of angry FLCL fans... :rolf:

I like some cartoons. Hell, I grew up watching the orignal Transformers. But I find these days few cartoons interesting as anime. I do like the new Justice League but I can't think of any others. I watch way more anime.

Id class the original transformers as anime since it was based of the the japaneese mangas.

And i go with Anime theres alot more depth to it.

Anime. Hands down. I never really likes Bugs Bunny. Just something about the animation always bugged me. Plus, I always felt like they were trying to send the wrong message to kids having Bugs crossdress and then preaching "Gay is wrong". Make up your mind.

Should we define “cartoon” or “anime” before ripping each other's throats out?

The Watchman is a “graphic novel,” which is a fancy way of saying, “cartoon.” Everything good you can say about anime goes for The Watchman in spades. (The Watchman simply kicks ass)

Anime is just a style of cartooning.

Music fans have been splintering into mutually hostile subgroups for years. While their fans sneer at each other, the great music makers themselves jam with each other, listen to each other's songs and could care less which style each one got his/her fame in.

If we Balkanize cartoon art by drawing big black lines between every style we risk losing something. Good is good, regardless of style. Bad sucks, even if it's in your favorite style.

Hugan
08-14-2007, 09:32 PM
Dhenshaw has the right idea. While I don't think anyone was getting out of line, I agree that we need to respect all the art out there for what it is and not what category it falls into.

Unless it doesn't have shemales in it. :baka: :rolf:

I hope it didn't sound like I was implying anyone was getting out of line. Heck, these are our opinions. They're just like ass-holes, we've all got one.

In your agreement you mention “respect.” Hell, I respect anyone who can draw something better than a stick figure. To me the key word is “enjoy.” Artists take their work seriously, they have to to become good, but the fruits of their labors can take us to new worlds, crack us up, or give us a hard-on.

So I agree wholeheartedly, nothing beats a cartoon babe (with a dick.)

I can't understand why the division exists myself. One couldn't have existed without the other. It was because of the big eyed Bugs Bunny design that anime derived its stylized look.

Yes, the Japanese took that style from us...and we are now taking the "anime" style from them...as a certain song said, it's just the circle of life and there's no need to demonize American animators for doing to the Japanese what they've done to the Americans.

As such...I like both equally. While I do wish the Americans had more respect for animation, there have been plenty of American made animation that I have thoroughly enjoyed, like Justice League and Gargoyles. I think my own creative life would've been diminished without them.

I hate to keep harping on my comparison of cartoons vs. anime, but the evidence is compelling.

The U.S. rules the world as far as music goes.

Why?

We don’t sing better.

We don’t have better writers.

The reason is that there isn’t a single corner of the Earth that we haven’t ripped off, musically.

How much African music do the Japanese incorporate into theirs?

How many English ditties have Mexicans melded into their sonnets?

How many Danes have made $1,000,000 by saying, “Kill the mutherfucker” over and over while a base backs them up at 500 db’s?

If you’re swimming in a sea of art you’re bound to find new combinations, improvements, and crazy ideas.

Who started what doesn’t matter…

“Hey, that gives me an idea…” means everything.

That bis the one thing I really hate - those heavy, black lines. Every time I see it in print or animation it reminds me of a child's coloring book. I like it when the dimensional effect is done with subtle shades of color. I liked the original Transformers, G. I. Joe, Johnny Quest, Speed Racer, Starblazers and Reboot. So much of todays animation and comic book art is either too detailed or just so simplified. I've got the old 40s Superman cartoons, but won't buy any of the new super hero stuff. Just way too out of proportion. One exception to that last - Superman vs Doomsday. Had to see how much they changed from the DC books.

Depends what era we're talking about.

Sadly most modern cartoons either borrow heavily from Japanese influences or are aimed at the under 12's.

But back in the 80's and 90's...God we had good shows then. Cartoons like Gargoyles, where there were more deaths than jokes. Mighty max with good writing and again generally pretty violent for a saturday morning cartoon show. Lately cartoons tend to talk down to viewers. But give me The original series of Biker mice from mars over any anime going.

And Mighty Max over any other animated show on earth.

This is intresting, because I would consider anime as cartoon. Depends how you look at it, anime/japanimation/manga are eastern style of drawing, and cartoon would be western style of drawing to me. But as time goes on the styles merge and cross alot, but thats what artists do, they get inspiration from around them.

Hell alot of the saturday morning cartoons I used to watch seem very similar to modern anime. My train of thought here is thundercats and cowboy beebop, I reckon alot of people may disagree.

At the end of the day, I like anime style now because it reminds me of my youth, but with a more grown up story and plot. I must insisted that this is a generalised view as I'm sure there is "cartoons" aimed at adults and "anime" aimed at children.

So as a result of my crazy views, I cannot vote as they are the same to me, linked together in my silly mind.

Superjizz
07-05-2008, 07:31 PM
If the definition of "cartoon" is something in the line of Gargoyles, GI Joe, Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, and Thundarr the Barbarian then I gotta go with cartoons over anime. While there's a few current anime series that I've enjoyed (Slayers, for instance), I've found myself gradually losing interest in anime more and more with most of the stuff that's been coming out. Most of my interest in anime lies strictly in the past with series such as Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman), Starblazers, Lupin the 3rd, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Speed Racer and Tranzor-Z (Mazinga).

ok heres the way i saw it before. I liked anime because i believed it had its realistic twist more than cartoons, but when it comes down to it, the story writer for an anime novel can just as easy work for some some one who does the art diferently to a point where people would consider it a cartoon. Therefore i have no reason or interest to diferentiate and compare the both since this was the largest issue that made me seperate the two

I think I'll have to agree with whoever said that anime is an eastern style of depicting a story, or better yet, a style of cartooning. For me the whole thing is more or less like a variation, so there's no definite reason to choose one over the other. I'm sort of more familiar with anime myself, being an Asian and all; but I also find some cartoons I managed to get my hands on quite enjoyable. Like, when something's good, it's good. Style doesn't really matter.

I can't really choose anime over cartoons, or cartoons over anime. Both, when done properly, are good visual media in their own right. If a cartoon has likeable characters and a good story, why would the way it's drawn make it worse than anime?

For that matter, what exactly -is- anime, other than a drawing style? MEGAS XLR (I believe) is done in the anime format, as is Teen Titans (for the most part, at least), but neither could be called anime by any definition, as both are considered cartoons - or 'western animation', if you prefer.

Some people say it's immoral or sick but, since i believe in freedom of expression as long as noone is harmed, then the personal choice to draw or view lolicon has nothing to do with any law since it is harmless art.

Pedophilia is illegal and should be illegal, noone in the world doubts that. That's because it is performed without the consent of the minor. But cartoons? Will they ban cartoons featuring murder next?

I'm not sure if what i read was true but i read it in a certain forum which was claiming the site hongfire got sued for having hentai and loli, and someone said "lolicon is illegal" but, if that's true, it means the people who voted for or created the law are out of their minds!

I don't mean to diss the people who are against loli, and i don't mean to support the people who like it. I'm just saying it's cartoons and, even if they are depicting something immoral in anyone's opinion, it's still cartoons; noone was harmed physically or mentally in the making of it.

I hope it's not true that they banned loli because this would mean that we are already being stripped of our voices, our votes and most important of all: our expressions!!!

Thanks for reading, please reply if you know something

If drawn well, why not? But to me anime and cartoons are works of art and should be respected. It is the twisted mind that should be punished...

Rebellion
11-09-2008, 04:41 AM
Eh...it's iffy.

Why it should stay legal- Well, it's not harming anyone. It's not a real child (basically) having sex. You can't/shouldn't control creative minds, at least in the expression of art. If someone is offended by it, then they just shouldn't look at it. It's solved that way.

Why it's disputable- Southern Baptists. Some people find it insensitive to show children (basically) having sex. I think It's a little wrong, but I could care less.

If it turns into something illegal, they might be either mentally retarded or just plain brainless to see the reasons behind Lolicon.

Isn't it more like the right of criticism the politics, investigate, humor, ...
But drawing children (or animals) having sex with adults, I don't get it.

Hi,

But drawing children (or animals) having sex with adults, I don't get it.

and thats the problem right there. it's the children part i take issue with. some claim it's okay cause it's just a drawing. but people are getting aroused by the image of a child. i get aroused by dickgirls, shemales and transexuals, this is true in both drawn, filmed and photographed media. i know on some level the same can be said for some lolicon fans.

should lolicon be made illegal?

personally i have no problem with loli like characters, it's when it gets sexual i take issue with, so i dont think loli characters should be banned, but there should be a long hard look at the sexualization of loli's.

I agree with Deathsheadx. The problem is that the erotica displays children being "sexually abused". I wholeheartedly agree that it is no different than drawing murder or other illegal activities, but there is a point that people believe exposure to images like loli would desensitize the viewer and promote enacting the illegal activity. There is a fine line between child pornography and loli. Well, maybe not a fine line. But it is awful similar.

Hopefully Mature adults Have the ability to distinguish between Drawn, cartoon-like anime and fantasy and the facts of reality and real life ... and don't go out and try to rape a child ...
When I was Stationed In Japan, and on Okinawa, the Idea behind the Hentai and Anime "comics" was that if they could see their emotions and thoughts expressed they were less likely to commit the actual acts violence ... It was a Living and venting through the Fantasy thing..
They had some serious Kinky and disturbing stuff there, it even bothered an old fart like me ... they did have weird ways of expressing them selves...

Even if a lolicon character is drawn in a sexual manner or for a sexual purpose, what arouses you is either the fact that you see a female in sexual action, that you see a child in sexual action, or that you see something immoral. These three options are the only ones i can think of.

Now, you can't put a pedophile on the same side with a person who likes immoral drawings, it just isn't the same. A pedophile finds children attractive for whatever reasons, while the second person finds the fact that something immoral is depicted attractive-not the children. And i think all of hentai is supposed to be immoral-think of films like "night shift nurses" there is much much immorality there although there aren't any lolicon characters. Rape, the rapist forces the boyfriend to watch, sexual slavery by blackmailing, a thousand things that if they were real then the people involved should be killed in the most horrible way as a punishment. There's even virgin rape on hentai-and it's acceptable because the virgin is over 18?

But still. My opinion stays that the artist has to give art. The art-fan chooses either to see something or not-its not like the artist forces you to see it. And the art-fan chooses to make it real in his or her mind or to see it as art.

Remember me:
If the sexualisation of loli characters is banned(i'm still talking about cartoons), it will be banned by pedophiles who feel guilty.

While I understand that Loli should not be illegal because there is nothing illegal about it in particular, I still find it distasteful. Comparing porn to art is what gives real art lovers a bad rap. I think Botticelli's Birth of Venus is a wonderful painting and extremely artistic, despite the nudity. Michaelangelo's David is wonderful art also. But trying to say that pencil drawings of pedophiles molesting children is art is insulting. Technically, yes, it is art. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve to be legal. But if you don't have children, you wouldn't understand either. To each his own, so long as no one gets hurt.

I deplore the idea of "Lolicon". I hope it doesn't really exist, and that this discussion is about a theoretical, not an actual problem.

But if it does exist, it is clearly protected by the ideal of free expression. The argument for free expression is simple: If we give people the freedom to express their ideas, we become inoculated against dangerous ideas. I truly believe our children are safer if we let pedophiles express their desires through Lolicon than if we force those desires into suppression.

This is definitely a time to invoke "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." (That's a terrible thought, isn't it? -- To go down defending the rights of a pedophile!)

Dear readers

Lolicon is actually illegal in certain countries. If you want to see if it's illegal in your country, you should visit wikipedia, type in "lolicon" and read the article.

According to the article, the first thing that was made illegal was cartoons that represented real people (what sounds like "realistic drawing" probably) which could make some sense. As we're moving closer to the present however, even cartoons that could possibly invoke what seemed to be like "child-abusing fantasies" were banned. This isn't in every country however, there is a list there.

The reason i'm talking so "coldly" about this subject is because whoever is charged with being associated to it could reach up to three years in prison ( !!!!!!!! )

I'm guessing, however, that viewing lolicon is as illegal as downloading movies, i'm guessing the real threats are the dodgy people who are like 50 years old and sell it or show it to kids or something. That would make more sense. And yeah that's wrong.

Anyway...

Please reply if you know something about the extent of this matter.

Mr Z

I'd go for cartoon to generalize the possibilities... since anime still falls under the cartoon category.

As from such titles in the Anime sub-category, I'm fascinated by the near-realistic renders of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex till the 2nd Gig series. Which of course those of the ones done by the other categories are way far from it.

Anime is by far better than cartoons. In the design, over all plots, voices and emotional connections.

You can really care about what happens in an anime most of the time. With cartoons they are usually one or two eps shorts. Anime tends to be more of a series. Just because of that simple reasoning anime is better. Cartoons are ok but they get to be boring. =P
