As for religion, I think having something to believe in is essential to the human condition. I know that while I was raised Baptist, I don't agree with everything I was taught. Still, it gave me the moral compass I generally still use today, and all religions are a good starting point for being a good person even if you don't believe in the god(s). All religions generally tell you to treat others as you/they want to be treated, not to kill, not to lie, and other general good ethics.

As for the "laws" against homosexuality in the Bible- they were given to the jews to help them survive. If the jewish people didn't propegate, they could have been wiped out by their enemies. We are talking about the race enslaved by Egypt and driven from their lands- survival was essential at the point these laws were given to them. I don't think the human species is in any danger of underpopulation any more. Also in the same area of the Bible you find laws saying not to eat shellfish or pork. Are we to believe these laws are just as vital? More likely than not these were put in place once again to help the survival of the jews. Back in these days, shellfish and pork are more likely to cause food poisoning due to being improperly stored or prepared. Either way, I don't think these laws are given equal weight.
